Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has reportedly agreed to become Liverpool’s next manager if Jurgen Klopp steps down at the end of the season – and he has long been linked with a move to the Premier League
Ruben Amorim has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, with the Sporting coach previously considered for numerous other Premier League jobs.
The 39-year-old led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and they have a good chance of winning the league again this season. Sporting are currently four points clear of their nearest rivals Benfica and also have a game in hand.
Accordingly Sky GermanyAmorim has agreed in principle to a deal to take over Liverpool next season and he refused to guarantee he would remain at Sporting ahead of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Benfica.
“No, I can’t guarantee that [I’ll stay]. I gave my word and I can’t take it back. If we don’t win titles, I’ll leave Sporting. It was clear from the start, it was the bet that I passed on to the players. “We have to win titles,” he said.
Amorim’s impressive work at Sporting has earned him recognition across the football world and has previously been linked with a number of top Premier League clubs. Aston Villa were already considering him as a possible replacement for Steven Gerrard in 2022.
However, he was reluctant to leave Sporting while they were still playing in the Champions League and Villa instead appointed Unai Emery instead, with the former Arsenal manager doing an excellent job.
Amorim was also linked with vacancies at Chelsea and Tottenham last summer, with both clubs looking for new managers following the sackings of Graham Potter and Antonio Conte. However, in an interview with , he publicly ruled himself out of the running for both jobs News diary.
“I’m not looking for anything,” he insisted. “And by the way, I want to appreciate what I have, not what is said. And it’s been said so many times… I’ve said it before, I’ve had contacts with other clubs, Sporting even knows it, but I’ve always done it. “I wanted to stay because I like being at Sporting.
Chelsea eventually signed Mauricio Pochettino, while Spurs picked Celtic for Ange Postecoglou. Later that year, Amorim was linked with Manchester United following Erik ten Hag’s poor start to the season.
When asked about the rumors, Amorim did not rule out a possible move to Old Trafford, but insisted United had not yet contacted him. However, it appears he is now close to a move to the Premier League as Liverpool are currently negotiating his release clause with Sporting.
