Goal! Everton 2-0 Nottm Forest (McNeil 76)
Well then. Garner plays the ball halfway into the Forest half, there’s a nice exchange of passes on the edge of the Forest area and suddenly McNeil absolutely hits the ball into the right corner.
In the time it took me to type, he tried again, this time directly with Sels.

67 mins Forest are currently showing more quality on the ball, but they are seeing less of it. Again they start from the back, with Gibbs-White getting the chance to drive forward… and his powerful loft ping immediately makes me regret that they’re showing more quality on the ball at the moment.

58 mins Branthwaite returns and inexplicably tries to dribble on the edge of his own penalty area. The move he tries to instigate fails almost immediately, and Gibbs-White is suddenly through and in the clear. He tries to bend it to the far right corner…it just curls wide apart.
Calvert-Lewin is lying on the ground and his right leg is being examined. Beto briefly seemed prepared to replace him, but after a thumbs up from the starter, he gives the starting number again.

56 mins Branthwaite is down after a clash, but Forest continue to play, to the turbo steam of the home faithful. Referee Taylor interrupts the proceedings. While he is being cared for. He is no longer on the pitch but is being prepared for a return.
The penalty scream is interesting. Young appears to be slipping through Hudson-Odoi, but a bit on tiptoe, apparently hits the ball. Nuno looks about as relaxed as you could imagine.

46 mins Subdued opening phase before Pickford applies pressure with a terribly cut kick-out. His team recovers, continues, but gives the ball back. Suddenly Forest has possession in the home half.

44 mins Well then! A cross to the back post, Hudson-Odoi throws the ball back to the mixer… but the ball hits Young’s outstretched arm. “No penalty” says the referee, the VAR also agrees and I’m glad because this wasn’t an offense serious enough to warrant an 80% chance of scoring, but the arm was away from the body and moving up the ball and I no longer understand the laws of a game I’ve been watching for 42 years.

42 minutes”“Given Idrissa Gueye’s age and illustrious career,” says Kári Tulinius, “he should actually end his playing years in the Saudi League or MLS and bask in the glow of a legend in his country and for Les Dogues. But he has every right to be Everton’s best player this season.”

40 mins And here he is now, hitting a neat cross to the back post for Wood, and he’s going to score the equalizer… no, he’s not! He shoots hard from close range and appears to be doing what is necessary, but Pickford makes a fantastic save, extending an arm and startling the Gwladys behind him; They react in the same way when he comes to pick up the following cross. This was a crucial intervention.

33 mins “Gio Reyna sticks a foot toward a ball he won’t win, forcing the opponent to kick it,” writes Eric Peterson. “He watched Anthony Gordon.”
I like Anthony Gordon. You could tell when he was there Everton that he could develop into a player, and whatever else is said about Eddie Howe, his ability to improve his subordinates is excellent. As for possible punishment, Reyna didn’t force Young to do anything – he is in control of his own activities.

GOAL! Everton – Nottingham Forest 1-0 (Gueye 29.)
Who saw this coming? Everton Work it left and Mykolenko crosses; The ball goes clear with his head, Gueye picks it up on the edge and shoots low, over Sels… and into the far corner, past the post! It’s an excellent finish, a shot that doesn’t seem remotely salvageable, and what a crucial intervention it could be!

29 mins “In relation to Duncan Edwards, the rosy picture is a possible one Everton Descent,” says Mary Waltz. “It has a Pythonesque ‘always look on the bright side of life’ quality, but in reality it would be like a real crucifixion, drawn out, bloody, painful.”
Out the door. Line left. One cross each.
