Allegations of corruption against the Spanish Football Federation and its members, both present and past, have caused great unrest. And it’s far from over.
A few weeks ago the Spanish government intervened to correct problems at the RFEF. Therefore, they say they have set up a special commission to monitor the federation brand. Vicente del Bosque, a legendary figure in Spanish football, will serve as chairman. In addition, Pilar Alegria, the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, said confirmed this.
“You know that last week we created the Supervisory, Normalization and Representation Commission of the RFEF, a supervisory body of the Spanish Football Federation. And that is why I am proud to announce that the representative of this commission will be Vicente del Bosque, who will be the face of Spanish football.
“Firstly, represent Spanish football. Secondly, ensuring transparency and good work in the next legislative period that the association must experience after the Olympic Games. Thirdly, we must successfully overcome the challenges that Spanish football faces. particularly with regard to the European Championships, the Olympic Games and the organization of the next World Cup in 2030.
During Del Bosque’s tenure as Spain coach, the national team won the European Championships in both 2008 and 2012. Additionally, he was the driving force behind the country’s first World Cup victory in 2010.
Before his time in the national team, he was coach of Real Madrid. There he won two La Liga championships and a Champions League. During his time at Santiago Bernabeu he made over 400 appearances.
Intervention by the federal government could lead to a ban on the LaLiga European Championship
Meanwhile, Spain – one of six countries that will host the 2030 World Cup – announced the formation of a special committee ahead of elections to replace Luis Rubiales.
Pedro Rocha is now facing an investigation into corruption allegations. This is despite the fact that he succeeded Rubiales last week. During the 2023 Women’s World Cup trophy ceremony, Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso without her consent, which led to his dismissal.
The former president of the association was then taken into custody at the beginning of April in connection with a corruption investigation.
In his speech on Tuesday, the President of the National Sports Council, Jose Manuel Rodriguez Uribes, also shared his thoughts. “The situation at the RFEF requires arrogance and the government is acting with seriousness, determination and responsibility.
“With the creation of this Supervisory, Normalization and Representation Commission, the CSD safeguards the general interest to restore the reputation, good name and image of Spanish football and to complete the electoral process with a renewed Assembly for the period 2024-2028.”
FIFA is concerned about the involvement of this government-appointed group in the Spanish football association.
What do UEFA and FIFA say?
However, not everyone at UEFA and FIFA is happy with Vicente del Bosque’s new role. Accordingly AS diarythey are now demanding an explanation of the role of the government in the federation. FIFA has strict rules on government intervention in member countries’ football associations. In 2008, FIFA and Spain clashed when the Spanish government prevented the RFEF elections. FIFA threatened to ban Spain from participating in Euro 2008, but the Spanish government complied with this request.
The RFEF must respond to FIFA’s request by Friday at the latest. Failure to do so may result in an automatic ban from participating in European and global events for both LaLiga clubs and the Spanish national team.
