Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah stresses that Jose Mourinho faces the challenge of leading Fenerbahce back to the top of the Turkish league, facing strong rivals such as Galatasaray.
Mourinho was officially introduced as the new head coach of Fenerbahce on Monday.
More than 200,000 people watched his performance on YouTube as Fenerbahce broadcast the event online.
Although there is some opinion in mainland Europe that suggests Mourinho is retiring from the top leagues, Appiah points to Mourinho’s continued success in several countries.
“I mean, it will be tough because Galatasaray has a very good team and also a very good coach, but Fener is the biggest team in Turkey and it must always stay that way,” said Appiah. rg.org in an exclusive interview.
Fenerbahce narrowly missed out on the title this season to city rivals Galatasaray, despite the club losing only one of their 38 league games and finishing with 99 points.
The club has not won the Turkish Süper Lig since 2014; the 2023 Turkish Cup win was the only major success in the last decade.
Appiah spent three years at Fenerbahce, winning the Süper Lig and the Turkish Super Cup.
