Turkish Super Lig giant offers for Joe Aribo

Joe Aribo began the 2023/24 season on the fringes of Southampton’s first team, but blossomed as the season progressed and ended up being an important part of the Saints’ midfield, something that apparently did not go unnoticed by Besiktas.
Joe Aribo was used primarily as a substitute in the first half of the season, but as the season progressed he became a key member of the team and stepped in when needed. He started just 16 times in the regular season, and played 16 more times as a substitute. With Stuart Armstrong injured late in the season, he started most games until the final game of the regular season and all three playoff games.
Now his talent seems to have been noticed elsewhere: he has been linked with his former club Rangers, but reports from Turkey suggest that one of the big clubs in the Süper Lig, Besiktas, is keen to make an offer for his services.
Footballnetnigeria say:
“Turkish giants Besiktas have entered into negotiations to lure Super Eagles striker Joe Aribo to the Tupras Stadium for the 2023/24 season following his impressive time at Southampton.”
“According to reports by Turkey-based journalist Gurkan Borangil, Besiktas’ new coach Giovanni Van Bronckhorst is keen to make the Nigerian international one of his first signings for the club.”
“According to new reports, the Turkish giants are currently in negotiations with the St. Mary’s team to sign the Nigerian player.”
The Dutchman, of course, knows Aribo from the first season 2021/22, in which he coached Rangers, shortly before Aribo moved to Southampton in the summer of 2022.
However, it is questionable how much of this has substance and how much is merely a linking of the two things because of the Rangers connection.
Despite his decent season at St Mary’s in the Championship, there are doubts about Aribo’s ability to perform in the Premier League. He started his first season well but his form dipped and following the arrival of Nathan Jones, after playing in the new manager’s first three games, he only made three appearances in the final 15 of the season.
But Aribo was actually not the only one in this team who was not at his best, so there is still great hope that he can get his Premier League career back on track and be a key member of the team next season.
The Saints signed him for around £6 million, so given his contribution last season, he is worth his money. His value has not diminished compared to the transfer fee we paid. At just 27, he still has a lot left in him, but with two years left on his contract, the club may feel that releasing him will clear the way for new signings.

With Stu Armstrong already on his way, we need a few people for the number 8 role. Even if Joe isn’t in the starting line-up in the Premier League because the club brought in someone else, I don’t think Joe will leave unless we get a silly offer (which is unlikely from Turkey). It’s also likely that Joe would get a higher salary in the Premier League, so this is probably not motivated by the player himself. |

Shitty journalism that focuses solely on the Rangers common denominator.

It doesn’t make sense for us with a player who has come in well and knows the system. |

On a good day, Joe clearly looks like he would play the part, but I’m not convinced he’s a Premier level player in the long term and we might be better off with a pair of ‘younger’ legs. |
