Atletico Madrid believe Chelsea could be tempted to sell Conor Gallagher in the next few weeks as they consider a possible move, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Gallagher is currently enjoying a well-deserved break after leading England to the final of Euro 2024, but a decision on his future will soon have to be made.
The 24-year-old was one of Chelsea’s standout players under Mauricio Pochettino last season, captaining the team for much of the campaign, but as he enters the final year of his contract, there are many questions about his future.
Atletico believe Chelsea could be tempted to sell Gallagher soon
The England international has made no secret of his desire to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge, but the club’s owners seem to have other ideas and estimate the midfielder’s value at £40-50 million.
Gallagher has attracted interest from rivals Tottenham and Atletico, while interest from Aston Villa has cooled as they close to a deal for Everton’s Amadou Onana.
It has already been reported that Atletico are the club that have shown the most interest in Gallagher, but a deal may be too expensive for them.
Chelsea will be keeping an eye on the situation and will not want to take the risk of losing the midfielder for free next summer or for a reduced price next January.
Romano gave an update on Atletico’s efforts to sign the Chelsea academy graduate, saying the La Liga side fear their English counterparts could be tempted to sell in the coming weeks.
“Atletico Madrid are working behind the scenes for Conor Gallagher, contacts on the player’s side, Madrid believe Chelsea could be tempted to sell him to them in the next few weeks, perhaps towards the end of the market,” he said on his Playback stream.
Chelsea have plenty of options in midfield and have added Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to their ranks, but the news that Andrey Santos is returning to Strasbourg on loan and Lesley Ugochukwu is also set to leave on loan could be a positive for Gallagher’s chances of staying at his boyhood club.
