Tottenham Hotspur have the chance to sign more players this summer
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia. According to a report from Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, Ange Postecoglou’s side have identified the La Liga player as a possible signing for this summer.
They are not the only team rumoured to be interested in the player, however, with rivals Arsenal also said to be keen to lure him to the Premier League this transfer window, and Real Madrid also said to be eyeing a potential transfer, so there seems to be plenty of competition for his signature.
Spurs could see Garcia as a reinforcement for their goalkeeping department, with Guglielmo Vicario securing the top spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season after joining from Empoli in Italy last summer.
The Londoners are patiently waiting for new signings, waiting until the right players become available. Timo Werner was signed permanently from RB Leipzig after his loan spell last season, while highly-rated youngster Archie Gray was also signed from Championship side Leeds United.
Postecoglou shared this update on the transfers: “At this time of year it is quite difficult for the fans because they do not have all the information and it is fair to say that there is a lot of misinformation out there.
“We work hard to get players and it’s a process where sometimes you have to be patient. But what we set out to do is still the plan and you have to stay disciplined with it. Sometimes timing doesn’t work out and it doesn’t happen as quickly as you’d like and you don’t get them (the players) at the right time, but I think it’s really important to stay disciplined and not run away and chase other things.
“So what we started at the beginning of the summer is still there, and I don’t want to put a timeline on it. A lot of it is out of our control and we just have to be patient. From my standpoint, right now we’re still in the phase where what we’ve identified is still what we’re looking for.”
Spurs’ preferred candidate, Garcia, has been under contract with Espanyol since joining as a youth player from local club Damm. Since then, he has worked his way up through his current club’s academy and has been a regular at various levels.
The 22-year-old Spanish youth international made the step up to the first team in 2021 and has since become one of their most valuable players. Now it will be a real battle for them to keep hold of him as other teams are paying attention to him.
Garcia still has a few years left on his contract, so Espanyol are under no pressure to cash in on him any time soon and can wait for the right offer for his services before considering a sale. They were promoted from the second division to La Liga last season.
